Sawentar Temple is located in the village of Kanigoro, Garum Subdistrict, east of Blitar. The temple is situated a few meters below the ground level. The temple was buried beneath the earth for years until it was excavated from 1915 to 1920.
This rectangular temple, 9.53 times 6.86 meters in size, is very similar to the Kidal Temple. The body of the temple stands on a platform of 7 x 7 meters in size and 1.5 meters in height. The temple is 10.65 meters high.
The body of the temple is smaller than its foundation, creating a narrow porch around it.
The entrance to the temple is on the west side, and there are alcoves on both sides of the entrance. There are no Kala head carvings on either the entrance frame or the alcove frame.
Within the walls of the temple, on the north and south sides, there are still vacant alcoves. In comparison to the entrance to the temple, there are relief sculptures depicting Kala ‘s heads above these alcoves.
There is a stairway, about 0.5 m long, to ascend to a stone or a cella. The ornament of the dragon ‘s head is on the lower portion of the stairs, while the left and right sides of the stairs are simple stones with no relief on the inside.
It remains unclear as to when the temple, considered to be a transitional style from the old to the new East Java temple, was built. It is believed that the temple was constructed between the beginning and the middle of the 13th century.
