Lawang Sewu is a historic building owned by PT. Indonesian Railways. During the Dutch government, this building was used as the Head Office of the private railway company Nederlandsch – Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij (NISM). This place was built on February 27, 1904. Lawang Sewu means “a thousand doors”, because this building has a lot of doors, but actually not up to 1000, but only 342 doors. Lawang Sewu’s address is on Jl. Pemuda, Sekayu, Semarang, Central Java.

The Mystery of the Underground Hallway
Lawang Sewu was used as one of the locations for the bloody battle between the Indonesian people and the Japanese. The battle was about to defend this area from being overrun by the Japanese.
The most haunted place from Lawing Sewu is in the underground hallway. In the past, the Japanese used underground hallway as torture chambers. Many soldiers were tortured and died in this place. Various tortures were given as a form of punishment for rebellion. It can be said that this underground passage is a “graveyard” as well as a “hell” for Indonesian warriors.
The Mystery, when a person is silent in the hallway, will find the appearance of a human shadow hanging above. The shadow had green eyes and walked crawling towards anyone who saw it.
The Mystery of the Dutch Soldier’s Doorman
A guard at the Lawang Sewu Building said that he often encounters things that are beyond reason at the westernmost or easternmost front door. There were sightings of Dutch soldiers in full uniform and carrying weapons. The thing that marked the occurrence was the breeze and mysterious smells such as the stench of rotting blood or the distinctive smell of “incense”, which is the odor that used for offerings.
The Mystery of the Old Well
There is an old well in the front yard of the building. The guards are always locks the well and never opens it. At night, often heard screams, pain, crying, and asking for help. It is said that in the past this place was also used as a location for assassinations by Japanese soldiers.
Operational Hours
Visitors can come to the location at 07.00 – 21.00 WIB. They can do various activities from photos or test their guts. Entrance ticket is only IDR 10,000 for adults. Entrance ticket for children aged 3-12 years is IDR 5,000. Visitors can also rent a tour guide at a cost of IDR 30,000.
