Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park (TNGGP) is one of the national parks located in West Java Province, Indonesia. Established in 1980, this national park is one of the oldest in Indonesia. The Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park’s objective is mainly to protect and conserve the beautiful mountain ecosystems.
Geographically, Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park (TNGGP) is located administratively included in the three regencies in West Java Province. Namely Bogor Regency, Sukabumi Regency, and Cianjur Regency with a total area of 24,270.80 Ha.
Mount Gede-Pangrango and its national parks have been designated by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve in 1977. Gunung Gede has the best spot to enjoy edelweiss, which is at Surya Kencana Square. At this spot, climbers will easily find edelweiss. Usually, this area is also often for camping place by climbers.
The uniqueness of Gunung Gede Pangrango
Although often considered unified, Gunung Gede and Mount Pangrango are separated and have different heights. The height of Gunung Gede is 2,958 m above sea level and the height of Mount Pangrango is 3,019 m above sea level. These two peaks are being one by a mountain ridge like a saddle at an altitude of around 2,400 meters above sea level, namely as the Kandang Badak area.
Mount Pangrango has never erupted, therefore the mountain has a relatively smooth cone-shaped peak. Mount Gede has erupted, marked by the presence of active craters including Wadon Crater, Ratu Crater, New Crater, and Lanang Crater.
Gunung Gede Pangrango: Flora and Fauna
This mountain was first inaugurated in 1980. The natural condition of the mountain is unique and has its character. Besides being unique, this mountain also stores a diversity of ecosystems such as Savana, Sub Alpin, Montana, Sub Montana, Swamp, and Lake. Sub Montana is one type of ecosystem in which there are various kinds of large and tall trees. Sub Alpin is one of the types of ecosystems in which there are vast stretches of grass.
In this area, there is much rare fauna, including Javan gibbons, Lutung Surili, Ajag dogs, Leopard, Otomops formosus like a flying squirrel Hylopetes bartelsi, two types of mice Kadarsanomys sodyi and Pithecheir Melanurus. We can also find birds in this region. Where the type of bird that exists on this mountain reaches 251 species. Some rare bird species we can find in this region, such as the Owl and the Javan Hawk.
